    Hamburg war die zweite Stadt 4️⃣ in Deutschland (nach Berlin), in der organisiert um Ligapunkte gespielt wurde (ab 1895/96), zunächst in der HAFB-Meisterschaft. HAFB stand für 4️⃣ "Hamburg-Altonaer Fußball-Bund". Somit spielten dort nicht nur Vereine aus Hamburg, sondern auch aus dessen Nachbarstädten wie z. B. den preußischen 4️⃣ Altona und Wandsbek sowie (bis 1914) Harburg. Die ersten führenden Vereine der Liga waren der SC Germania Hamburg, einer der 4️⃣ Vorläufer des Hamburger SV, und der Altonaer FC von 1893. Ab 1905 gewann Victoria Hamburg viermal in Folge die Meisterschaft 4️⃣ und übernahm die Vorherrschaft. 1913/14 entstand die NFV-Verbandsliga, woraufhin die Hamburger 1a-Klasse für eine Saison nur noch zweitklassig war.

    Der Spielbetrieb 4️⃣ wurde auch im Ersten Weltkrieg aufrechterhalten.
