    The origin of lotera can be traced far back in history. The game originated in Italy in the 15th century and was brought to New Spain (modern Mexico) in 1769. In the beginning, lotera was a hobby of the upper classes, but eventually it became a tradition at Mexican fairs.
    Spain's national lottery is the second-oldest in the world. It was introduced in Cdiz in 1812 as a way to raise state funds for the troops fighting Napoleon in the Spanish War of Independence  although it wasn't referred to as a Christmas lottery until 1892.
